  1. Choose a title

    • A short, singable phrase
    • It promises a feeling or a story

  2. Write the chorus

    15 minutes

    Build the melody and lyric around the title. Repeat the title at least twice.

  3. First verse

    15 minutes

    Set the scene with concrete details that lead into the chorus.

  4. Break

    5 minutes

  5. Second verse

    15 minutes

    Move the story forward. Don't repeat the first verse's information.

  6. Bridge

    10 minutes

    A new angle or a twist, with a different melody and chords.

  7. Record a demo

    • Sing and play the whole thing into a voice memo
    • Write out the lyrics with the chords
