Dream Journal to Story

by WaffleKnight Creative Exploration

Turn last night's dream into the seed of a story. Start within minutes of waking, before it fades.

Take one weak scene apart and rewrite it so it earns its place. About 1 hour.

Three 25-minute sprints for when the house finally goes quiet, for 3 rounds. Before you start, reread only the last paragraph you wrote. Nothing more, or you'll start editing.

A complete short story draft of 2,000–3,000 words in one sitting, about 2 hours. You'll write it straight through. Finished beats perfect.

A classic 20-minute body scan, moving your attention slowly from your toes to the top of your head. Lie on your back. You're not trying to relax, just to notice. If you fall asleep, that's fine too.

A 25-minute bedtime routine to tell your brain the day is over. Start about half an hour before you want to be asleep.

Scramble a racing mind with random, unconnected images, the kind of drifting thought that comes just before sleep. About 10 minutes. Pick a word with no repeated letters, like BLANKET.

The relaxation drill made famous as a military method for falling asleep anywhere. It takes practice: give it a few weeks.

Tense and release each muscle group from your feet up, so your body learns to let go. About 5 minutes, lying in bed. For each step, tense the muscles for 5 seconds, then release and notice the difference for the rest of the time.
